Malfunctioning hardware?
« on: 22 August 2011, 04:44:09 pm »

I got a Sheevaplug with e-SATA and an 8GB SD card, running debian from the SD card, bought from NewIT in May but seldom used until now.

1) On boot, I get multiple messages about bad eraseblock on NAND device, and, little later, about errors on mtdblock devices:

NAND device: Manufacturer ID: 0xad, Chip ID: 0xdc (Hynix NAND 512MiB 3,3V 8-bit)

The system completes booting more or less normally, but these diagnostics look suspicious. Can anyone provide advice?

2) fdisk -l reports that mtdblock1 and mtdblock2 are don't contain a valid partition table. Is this expected?

3) Again to booting sequence:it says it has problems with e-SATA:

When the boot completes, the eSata disk is visible to fdisk (formatted and works. Performance to be measured).
Still, that sentence 'limiting SATA speed to 1.5 Gbps' looks disappointing.
(The esata disk is a 2TB Caviar Green in an IcyBox container.)

Again, someone can provide advice?
Thanks

Alvi,

Glad you post it here. I am having this kind of error too. I hope someone will reply on this post and gives us some tips on how to solve it. Thank you!

Does the kernel version you are using have known SATA issues ?

NB. It is not good netiquette to quote the whole previous post, it conveys no extra useful information to read it twice.

My kernel knows about esata and in fact esata is working correctly. But the message about speed reduction is there

Same type of errors. They began to appear after I changed the filesystem of my SD card. No idea if it is bad or not. The sheeva runs normally and the boot from SD (debian) is normal. I would try a fresh installation to see if something changes. It seems NAND related though.
I'm trying furthermore a lot of SD carsd of every possible firm.

I haven't looked at this board for a while, and I recognise this is an old post, but...

1. Bad erase block - normal to have a few of these. NAND file system takes care of these.

2. MTD Block error. I had these as well at 0 8 etc. Problem was I imaged the SD card using USBTool with the volume option. You must use the device option to set up the partion tables etc correctly. Maybe that's the problem here. You can always re-image your SD card with one of the NewIT images and retest.

3. The SATA link going up and down. My bet is power to the ESATA enclosure is marginal. I have had a couple of these cheap wallwarts fail on me in this manner. They appear to be working, but they are too low voltage during the boot/spin up sequence. This causes the ESATA link to go up and down and settle at 1.5GB/s. Other symtoms are link resettting a couple of times per week. With a good power brick life is good. I guess its not only the SheevaPlug that has problems with its PSU....

Andrew...
