Debian Squeeze on Dreamplug: man pages missing
« on: 16 October 2011, 07:11:46 pm »

I recently installed a Debian Squeeze image for testing pourposes:

http://downloadsnewit.co.uk/SD-images/Dreamplug/NewIT-Dreamplug-Debian-Squeeze/NewIT-Dreamplug-Debian-Squeeze-8Gb-30Aug11.img.gz

1) First of all, I had some error messages concerning locales when installing new packages. I resolved installing and reconfiguring locales, as follow:

apt-get install locales
dpkg-reconfigure locales (and choosing the appropriate locale for my language)

2) Second, I noticed that there are missing man pages. I partially resolved, for commands like 'ls', installing 'manpages-posix':

apt-get install manpages-posix

3) But there are still some manpages missing: for example if I try "man apt" or "man fdisk" I got an error of missing file (e.g. /usr/share/man/man8/apt.8.gz). There are several man pages missing. I noticed that if I reinstall the package with missing man page I resolve the problem: for example with 'apt-get --reinstall install apt', I got apt man page working.

Any idea, other than reinstalling all packages, to fix all man pages missing?

Thanks

I decided to proceed in this way:
1) using the command "dpkg -l > debian-packages.txt" I created a list of installed packages
2) I opened the file debian-packages.txt with OpenOffice Calc and using csv filter I divided the file in columns
3) Using Calc I created a script to reinstall all installed packages
4) I run the script and now all it is fine

If someone is interested I can post the script.

Hi,

Another way to do exactly the same thing (remove the echo command to execute):
Code: [Select]
for i in `dpkg -l | awk '{ print $2; }' | tail -n +6`; do echo "apt-get --reinstall install $i"; done

Regards.
