Being a bit twitchy about my oft demonstrated ability to mess things up, do these devices have the facility to reset them to their 'as delivered' state so that if it all goes horribly wrong I can just start again from the beginning?
Or maybe there's some backup/restore procedure?

Yes, you can reset the plug into the original state (even though we do not know clearly what is the original state...). The easiest way is to play with the SD card instead of internal flash memory. But you can re-flash also the internal flash; just less easy (but this is well documented for the SheevaPLug and it should be the same for this one)

Edit: it seems that the default OS will be Debian 5.0 (Lenny)
