Upgrade Dreamplug to Debian
« on: 07 November 2012, 07:53:24 am »

I'm trying to upgrade my Dreamplug device to something more recent than Ubuntu 9.04.
After my failed attempt to upgrade, my dreamplug boots kernel image from a USB stick and then searches for a non existent drive and then panics.

Here is an exceprt from the bootlog:
Code: [Select]
[   19.964219] VFS: Unable to mount root fs via NFS, trying floppy.
[   19.970558] VFS: Cannot open root device "sda2" or unknown-block(2,0)
[   19.977028] Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
[   19.985471] 1f00            1024 mtdblock0  (driver?)
[   19.990659] 0800         1921024 sdc  driver: sd
[   19.995313]   0801         1920993 sdc1 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000sdc1
[   20.002517]   0802         1817019 sdc2 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000sdc2
[   20.009700] 0820         3921920 sde  driver: sd
[   20.014367]   0821           97656 sde1 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000sde1
[   20.021569]   0822         3822266 sde2 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000sde2
[   20.028751] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(2,0)

To upgrade I have followed this document "DreamPlug-Upgrade kernel and root-filesystem guide_ Aug-28-2012.pdf" (from [1]). I have reached the part where it says:
Code: [Select]
Marvell>>setenv x_bootcmd_kernel fatload usb 2 0x6400000 uimage
Marvell>>setenv bootargs 'console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sdc2 rootdelay=10'
Marvell>>saveenv
Marvell>>reset
and here I am stuck.

I have noticed the guide says I need to do this bootload change command from a Windows machine. I disregarded this advice as I could not understand how Putty over serial line does anything different than Minicom from my Linux desktop. When I tried following this advice, I could not install Windows VCP drivers for the JTAG console (made a separate thread about this at http://www.newit.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,3608.msg9914.html#msg9914).

Dreamplug version number is
"0801
 0101A"
Dreamplug model: 003-DS2001

the kernel is supposed to find 'root' at /dev/sdc2

The kernel is reporting what is wrong (also that sdc2 does exist and has been found).
Check that the u-boot 'bootargs' variable is not being re-written when you boot the plug.
Post the output from u-boot's 'printenv' if you get stuck......
