HDMI input
« on: 14 April 2013, 07:47:31 am »

Does anyone here know of a small formfactor product that supports HDMI input?  I need something that I can connect to a video camera/digital camera with HDMI out, something I then can set up to encode and record the video.  It doesn't have to be very powerful, since I only need to encode at around 5 fps (though power doesn't hurt either), but it has to handle 1080p30 input.

There are specialised encoders out there that will take HDMI input and provide RTSP/whatever, but they're incredibly expensive and I'd also like the freedom of having shell access and tailoring the software to my needs.  I suppose I can build a PC that will do this, but I'd like to avoid the hardware and administrative bloat of that.

Any suggestions?

Any GoogleTV 2.0 does this. Have a look at Vizio.

Is it possible to run a fairly standard Linux distro on any GoogleTV 2.0 devices?

I don't think so... You'd have to switch to Android. .. Also bear in mind that access to the HDMI stream is fairly restricted -most code is locked and runs inside the GPU... This is to comply with HDCP copy protection scheme. ..

Thanks.  While attractive because of the price, it sounds hard to modify.

The Hauppauge HD PVR2 coupled with one of the devices available on Newit could have been a nice combination, had there been a Linux driver for the PVR2.  There is a driver for the older PVR version, but it hasn't got HDMI in.
