GuruPlug and 3G modems
« on: 12 June 2010, 11:34:25 am »

Hi all,

I am (obviously) the author of Sakis3G script. Sakis3G is an all-in-one small-footprint (200KB) alternative for establishing 3G connections (CDMA not yet supported, so not suitable for U.S.), which can be essentially useful on GuruPlug (which also lacks usual NetworkManager/Modemmanager bundle). Sakis3G also embeds Usb-ModeSwitch (latest version), which is required, still not available on Lenny repositories.

I've published a step-by-step guide on how to turn your GuruPlug into a router for sharing 3G internet connection, with no other intervention than just plugging USB modem, using Sakis3G script (video demonstrating final result is available on YouTube).

All Sakis3G dependencies are satisfied by pre-installed Lenny packages. You need to install nothing more.

Guide is available there.
  • Guide may initially look huge, but this is to reduce skill required for going through it. Experienced users are expected to be finished within 15-20 minutes.
  • Guide provides instructions against manufacturer-supplied Lenny distribution. If you are using another one distribution, you have to adapt steps yourself.

Those who face a problem, can get support:
Code: [Select]
# sakis3g man
# sakis3g man sakis3g.conf

Those who's operator is not found within list of known operators, may ask for advice on required arguments on this board.

Latest GuruPlug precompiled version is available using this permalink: http://www.sakis3g.org/versions/latest/guruplug/sakis3g.gz
Sakis3G is distributed under GNU GPL v2 and source code is available on: http://www.sakis3g.org/versions/latest/sakis3g-all-in-one-source.tar.bz2
  • You need to "apt-get install" following packages if wishing to build from source: build-essential, libusb-dev

Sakis -

Thank you for this. I will test the package on a Guruplug (and Sheevaplug?) as soon as practical (it will take a couple of days).

Hi Marcus,

I would be grateful if you could test it with a Sheevaplug as well. If that wvdial bug still persists, try using --pppd switch when invoking Sakis3G as well. This will force it to directly use pppd and not go through wvdial (or you can just uninstall wvdial since it is broken, on which case --pppd is automatically determined).

Hello Saki,
I was looking for a similar solution (no wvdial) for the Dreamplug with Guiplug.
I have then managed to connect my USB GSM Modem via chatscripts but I will be really happy
if you can port the package on the Dreamplug.
I can help you to debug it.
Let me know cheers.
