For temporary fix of GuruPlug, please connect the device to 10/100 Mb Ethernet instead of 1 Gb to see whether reboot issue will be gone.

We are working on the last step of permanent solution which is either changing the daughter board or the inductor.  Once the solution is finalized, we will inform our Guruplug server PLUS users soon.

I have requested Globalscale not to send the second batch of units until they have had the solutions mentioned above implemented on them, yes this means another delay for some customers, but it does mean getting a functional unit.
We are awaiting a response as to how Globalscale and New IT are going to rectify the issues that some customers who have units from the first batch are experiencing.

“Guru Plug Server - Plus Technical Announcement
Some of you may have experience “heat problems” when using your Guru Plug Server “Plus” under certain conditions. You will be pleased to know we have isolated the problem, and would like to make the following clarifications and the recommended procedure to eliminate this problem.
There have been a number of postings in the Forums stating the problem was caused by the power supply, and, while in the past we had issues due to some bad capacitors, this in reality has been more of a smoke screen.

The problem is directly related to heat generated by the load on the CPU.  Having 2 x 1Gb Ethernets and WI-FI running concurrently with other interfaces, causes the CPU to work harder and a lot hotter. We have found the GuruPlug‘s small enclosure, is not efficient as we would like at heat dissipation, therefore we suggest the following as a workaround.

The GuruPlug Server “Plus” is designed in its current form for maximum usage with one Gb Ethernet port and one 10/100Mb Ethernet port.  Whilst using the unit in accordance to these parameters will solve the majority of “heat problems”, it is highly recommended as an additional precaution you use 10/100MB speed connections for both Ethernet ports as it will further reduce the high temperatures on the enclosure surface.

There may be some advanced users who really need the 1Gb speed connection, and we understand the dilemma you may currently face. Please rest assure we have not forgotten your requirements, and in about 3-4 months time we will be releasing a simple to install “Professional Upgrade Kit“so you can take advantage of the higher speed connections. In the interim the units will work effectively and the slightly slower speed connection.

So this is a change from what we was originally told, there will be no daughter board change.  We have asked about the “Professional Upgrade Kit“, and whether this will be something existing customers will get for free or have to buy, and at this point Globalscale will neither confirm or deny either way.

7/17/2010 Guru Plug Server - Professional Upgrade Kit

First of all, we wish to thank our loyal customers who have been very patient and stood by us while we were resolving the “Heat Problem” with the GuruPlug Server Plus!

Further to our announcement about a week ago, we are pleased to advise of the permanent solution to the problem. In the coming weeks (not months), we will be releasing the simple to install “Professional Upgrade Kit”. Part of this kit includes a micro fan with wire harness.  This fan will not only dissipates the heat being generated by the CPU, but also brings the GuruPlug Server Plus back in line with its original specifications. Therefore, those of you who bought the Plug specifically to run 2 x 1Gb ethernet will be able to do so freely and without limitations.

The “Professional Upgrade Kit” together with full instructions, will be provided free of charge on request to all existing users of the GuruPlug Server Plus, but there will be a nominal shipping and handling charge . We will be issuing instructions shortly on how to obtain a kit.

Those of you who receive units from shipments starting in August 2010, will have the kit already installed and you will be able to run all applications to the fullest from the get go.

We apologize for not making this announcement sooner, but we wanted to do our “due diligence” and carry out exhaustive field and thermal tests to ensure you will be receiving  a quality and robust product which captures the “always on eco friendly” philosophy of the “Plug Computer”.

Thank-you once again for your encouraging support while we were dealing with this problem, and we hope you will  check our web-site regularly for details on more new and exciting products that will be introduced in the coming months.



What this means to our customers.

•   For those of you that are still waiting for your pre ordered GuruPlug Server Plus, we have asked that the New IT order be held back to have this upgrade kit fitted before being despatched.  This does however mean another delay, but we feel it is worth it to have a fully functioning product, as soon as we get a proper estimation on the delivery we will of course contact you to advice.

•   For those of you that already have your GuruPlug Server Plus, we are talking to Globalscale about how the distribution of this “Professional upgrade kit” will be handled. We of course have all our GuruPlug Server Plus customers’ details and will contact you again as soon as we have an update on this.


I would like to say many thanks for your patience, and kind comments on how we have handled this situation so far, the end is in sight.

We have at long last been given a despatch date for the next batch of GuruPlug server Plus and Standards from Globalscale.  These will be despatched from China on the 30th August, they will then be sent over to Hong Kong, and then be flown over to the UK.  Normally we receive our orders about 7 to 10 days after the despatch date from China, we will email again once we have the actual delivery date to ourselves. 
We will aim to despatch all orders within 72 hours of receipt, but appreciate your patience during this busy period.

We now have two outstanding orders for the GuruPlugs which are due into us, we have been given the following despatch dates from Globalscale:

Order 1 - 10th September
Order 2 - 15th September

This means we should receive these ten days later and therefore will endeavour to get our customers orders out within 72hrs.

We have had confirmation from Globalscale that the first GuruPlug order did leave China on Friday; I will update this post once it lands in the UK and we have an accurate delivery date to us.

We are still awaiting details from Globalscale on the Professional Upgrade kits for the existing GuruPlug Server Plus customers, again when they do pass on details we will post here.

After a breif delay by Chinese Customs, the units are now in Hong Kong and booked on a flight to the UK tomorrow, so all being well we should have them on Friday.

We may get some units despatched on Friday, but the majority will be despatched on Monday.

We have the first shipment in the warehouse and are currently packing orders, some have been despatched today, with the remainder being despatched on Monday and maybe some on Tuesday, depending how we get on over the weekend.
